Spatial aspects of relocation strategies of high-tech enterprises in the face of war. Ukrainian-Polish perspective

Time period: 2022-2023
Financing: Excellence Initiative – Research University (IDUB)
EUROREG research team: Anna Kniazevych, Agnieszka Olechnicka, Anna Kniazevicz

The war in Ukraine (lasting since 2014 and turned into a full-scale one on the 24th of February 2022) caused several Ukrainian companies, including those representing Industry 4.0, to relocate their activities within the country's territory (e.g., from Kharkiv to Lviv) or abroad (mainly to Poland).

The project tackles the mechanisms and consequences of relocation decisions taken in the face of war by high-tech enterprises in the area of their functioning, as well as the restructuration of the hosting innovation ecosystems.

The project aims to assess the extent of the relocation of Ukrainian Industry 4.0 companies, define its spatial dimensions, examine the relocation strategies of Ukrainian enterprises in times of war and identify the factors influencing the choice of a new business location. It will contain the analysis of statistical data concerning Industry 4.0, interviews with host cities authorities in Poland and Ukraine, a review of the policies supporting the relocations, and in-depth case studies of relocated companies.
